Orange Shirt Day

On Monday, October 2nd, Swan Hills School staff and students are encouraged to wear orange shirts to acknowledge the history of Canadian Residential Schools. Indian Residential Schools existed from 1884 to 1996, and had a large and terrible effect on thousands of aboriginal children. The Canadian Government offered an apology to aboriginal people for the residential school system, then instituted a Truth and Reconciliation Commission to document the suffering and to offer recommendations for a new relationship.

The colour orange is used to bring attention to this issue, as we work to advance reconciliation in helping to build a stronger and healthier Canada.
